You can invite friends or compete against up to three random opponents. The game includes unobtrusive iAds which are removed by purchasing any upgrade.Īir Wings is the first multiplayer game I’ve played that uses Game Center for matching opponents, and it works remarkably well. I recommend getting only the second plane pack if you’re strapped for cash, since it gives you the extremes (the fastest, least durable plane and the toughest, slowest one) to nicely round out your arsenal.

There are two upgrade packs for purchase, each containing two airplanes. The plane upgrades are worth buying, since the basic “Dart” airplane is easily outdone by the upgraded models.

Buying a map just allows you to use it for practice flights. This isn’t too bad though, since multiplayer battles take place in any randomized map whether you’ve bought it or not. By default you can use only the most basic plane and one combat arena.

This means that the app is free to download and play, but you can pay via in-app purchases to unlock more planes and maps. Unlike Pangea’s other games, Air Wings uses a freemium payment model. It’s a lot like Bugdom in that respect, set in a miniature environment filled with everyday objects like flashlights and concrete blocks. The 3D graphics are nice, but hardly revolutionary. Controls are responsive and can be adjusted for sensitivity. There’s a pretty low flight ceiling, so don’t expect to haul up on your iPhone to pull a loop and get the drop on a tailing opponent – you’ll just straighten out into a level flight at max altitude. Tilt the iDevice to direct your plane and use buttons to fire, select weapons, boost, or calibrate the accelerometer.

The controls are similar to any other accelerometer-based flight game. You pick up weapons (spitballs, rubber bands, pencil missiles, etc) to engage in multiplayer online battle through Game Center. After re-releasing some older OS X games on the App Store like Nanosaur 2, Bugdom 2, and Cro-Mag Rally, Pangea has moved on to new material.Īir Wings puts you behind the controls of a maneuverable paper airplane, flying through a variety of household environments like a cardboard box fort or a sandbox.

The venerable creators of my favorite classic Mac games have a modern iOS hit on their hands with Air Wings.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of paper airplanes, so it comes as no surprise that I’m enjoying the latest game from Pangea Software. Mostly Recommended.Review: Air Wings Posted: Ma| Author: Evan Brus | Filed under: Apple | Tags: Air Wings, game, iOS, Pangea Software, paper airplane | 5 Comments

Definitely worth it on budget, snatch it up at once! At full price, well, think twice - probably worth it, but consider if there is something you might want more, first. But, alas, tedium does set in after a while. I can recommend Bug!, with the caveats previously mentioned. Bug! Is a good game, nearly great?.and it is a shame that such greatness was not actually reached. This combination of flaws, keeps Bug! From the acclaim I wish I could give it. The levels tend to repeat basic puzzles too often in new guises. The levels are slightly too large, and the ability to save the game is too rare. The greatest failing of Bug! is simply that it starts out stunningly wonderful, but becomes routine. So often all that separates a classic from obscurity is a few extra weeks of design or effort. As my faithful readers have come to know, missing greatness by a small margin tends to gall me. Bug! is a blend of brilliance and boredom, and with a little more effort, could have been truly great. On the other hand, the inability to save at any level makes play tedious, and not all levels are clever, so that the annoyance of repetition sets in. On one hand, a marvelous 3D viewpoint, unique to the genre is used, excellent use of voice and some clever level designs, combined with amazing Boss fights, make Bug! a playable wonderment. The plot revolves around a black widow spider named Queen Cadavra, who has stolen away Bug's entire village of insects, it is up to the clownish Bug to save the town and whup the Queen.

The story: Bug, a cartoon insect movie star, must complete his latest picture. Game play consists of jumping on enemies, spitting on them, and leaping from place to place, riding bubbles or jumping on springs, and collecting gems and powerups. Jennifer Reitz of Accursed Toys voiced her views that are similar to mine on this marginal underdog: " Bug! is essentially a 3D Sonic The Hedgehog or Mario starring an insect in the title role. Bug! is an above-average 3D platformer from SEGA that could be much more fun.
